Haircuts for Haiti

Category : Uncategorized

Crowds of people were gathered around Rocky’s Mart on Feb. 15. As I approached the table to ask about the crowd, I quickly was informed of a fundraiser for Haitian victims.

Emily Golloub, who was behind the front table, had told me that all of the money made from the fundraiser would go to the Doctors Without Borders Foundation.

Golloub also told me that there was a line of at least four people since they opened at 12 p.m. The response to the fundraiser was immediate and humongous.

The line remained at a twenty minute wait most of the day.

Along with the haircut donation, students were also able to purchase raffle tickets for gift baskets, televisions and other prizes amounting to over $1000. Prizes were all donated by some of Montclair’s local stores.

Sam Gherman, organizer of the event, approached stylist Edgar Anthony about two weeks prior to the event. Anthony was looking for a way to raise money for the victims in Haiti and Gherman held his ticket.

Since the staff of the salon doesn’t operate on Mondays, Anthony thought it would be best if the fundraiser would be held on a Monday, so they could devote their full attention to the students of Montclair.

Anthony was planning on having a cut-a-thon of his own, but taking part of a fundraiser on a college campus was more appealing. The Edgar Anthony Salon had just opened up for business, so promoting their new shop was a plus too.

They used the electric razor as well as old fashioned scissors.

Among the seven hairstylists who attended the fundraiser, four of them were from Anthony’s shop. They ranged in experience. Usually the shop performs cuts and colors, but unfortunately they couldn’t color hair outside their salon.  Anthony expressed regret when he said, “we can’t color hair in a thirty minute time frame.”

Overall, Golloub and Gherman consider this fundraiser a success; raising over $790. Thank you to Edgar Anthony’s Salon in Montclair and to all the students and faculty who participated in the event and donated.
